Losing it

The following definitions are from Wiktionary, searched as of today.

Dementia, noun, (pathology) a progressive decline in cognitive function due to damage or disease in the brain beyond what might be expected rom normal aging. Areas particularly affected include memory, attention, judgement, language and problem solving.

Alzheimer's disease, noun, (neurology, pathology) a disorder involving loss of mental functions resulting from brain tissue changes.

Many years ago, I took the time and effort to learn how to solve the Rubik's Cube.

Granted, I learned only the beginner's method, so it's not for speed, but just for being able to solve it.

I put in the time and effort, and for a few years after that, the skill stayed with me, so I thought it's something that will stay for life, like how to ride a bicycle. Learned once, skill gained forever.

But I was wrong, for I have lost the skill. Retained neither the muscle memory nor the brain memory.

Sad, for the lost in memory, the skill, and the effort.

Yahoo 奇摩知识里找到的解释是:

台语“挫赛”的用法有很多。挫赛的说法:拉屎。完蛋啦。死定啦。惨啦等意思。

哦,现在我知道了,嘿嘿!

Heterochromia iridis

According to NIH, heterochromia iridis is a condition characterized by abnormalities of the iris (the coloured part of the eye).

The way I explain it is: different colour eyes lah. =P

After being repaired due to the accident last month, the front lights of my car are now of different colour.

One sparkly brand new white, one the aged yellow tint, like having cataract.

Does anyone know a good way to clean or clear the tint from the old light?

Got 'em!

Coca-cola has special Chinese New Year version of Coke cans, eight version to be precise, each with a unique Chinese character complete with its pinyin as well as its English and Malay translations.

I didn't think of collecting them initially since I only had two out of the eight. But while at the inlaw's I managed to get four more so I was consciously on the look out for the remaining two thereafter.

Wifey managed to get the seventh, so I sent out request on three different WhatsApp groups asking for help locating the eighth.

A few responded, agreed to help keeping an eye out or supplied location where they had seen selling the character I was looking for. None in the group with the largest number of people responded though, hmm...

To those who helped in one way or another, thank you very much! You know who you are. ^_^

As for those who couldn't be bothered, no thanks to you! Call yourself friend huh? =P

Anyway, I finally got the last character today, completing the set. =D

These are the Chinese characters, their pinyin, their English and Malay translations, in that order:

an(1), peace, kesejahteraan
shun(4), smooth (year), kecemerlangan
ji(2), good luck, tuah
wang(4), fortune, rezeki
fa(1), wealth, kekayaan
man(3), abundance, kelebihan
xi(3), happiness, kebahagiaan
fu(2), prosperity, kemakmuran

Vocabulary Lesson with CK (January 13)

unchubby verb

No kiddo, unchubby is not a real word, it's only real for Her Unchubbiness*.
* also not a real word

Basically unchubby means to make not chubby.

Here's the usage example from Her Unchubbiness:

In Hindsight

As part of the departmental Sports Carnival, yesterday and today were the foosball event.

I joined solely for the lucky draw, which is eligible for participants only. The first prize is an Ultrabook you see, and I really want one for my wifey.

Hey, at least I am honest! =P

Nelson, who's in the same group, who signed me up in the first place saying we would be a team, 'aeroplaned*' me yesterday. But I stuck to it, for the Ultrabook, of course. =P
* gave me the slip

I partnered with another teammate, who is good in foosball, and let my 10% skill plus 90% luck carried us through two straight wins. The second team of our group, the mixed double, performed admirably winning two straight games as well so our group got into foosball final, which happened today.

Nelson was there today, the group decided to stick with yesterday's pairing for the first two teams since it worked quite well. I was in the first team, so Nelson ended up in the third team.

With the skill of my teammate and my sheer dumb luck, we won the first match in two straight games. Nelson, probably bought by our opponent team since they have pretty ladies in their team, tried his damnest to distract me during my play.

Our group lost the second match, the mixed double match so the third team was up. Nelson in action, and had the pressure of deciding the outcome. My chance to revenge, muahahaha!

Only I didn't. Not that I didn't want to, mind you, it's because I lack Nelson's nonsense talking skill. =\

And I wanted my group to win also lar...

During Nelson's play, his mobile phone rang, he looked at the caller and passed the phone to me, asked me to talk to 'Ayam' (Malay for chicken). Which I did, all nice and proper, informing Ayam about Nelson's situation.

In retrospect, I should have cracked some jokes instead. Guess I am just not a quick-witted person, oh well. Anyway, here are the jokes in hindsight:

"This is Nelson Tan, the God of Birds voice mail, recorded using the irresistible sexy voice of CK Goh, please leave a message after the tone. *Beep!*"

"You have reached Nelson Tan, the God of Birds' answering machine. Press one for English, press two for chicken language, press zero to speak to a real person."

"*buuck buuck buuck buuck buuck...*" (random chicken sound)

=P

Oh, our group won the foosball event, woohoo to sheer dumb luck! =P

Vocabulary Lesson with CK (March 12)

Haven't done this in quite a while, again. slacker point +1

Not really a special word this time, it's just that it holds special meaning for me today so here's this entry serving dual purposes.

nausea noun

From the ever useful Wiktionary:

1. a feeling of physical unwellness, usually with the desire to vomit
2. strong dislike or disgust
3. sea-sickness

Feeling nauseous after swallowing that nauseating stuff today. Couldn't hold myself together to continue work.

The feeling did not abate after taking a dump. Nasty.

Guess it's just really disgusting.

den

Disclaimer: this entry is an exact copy, i.e. plagiarism, of my wifey's post in Facebook. I just have to share this. =)

-----

Hsiang was drawing some pictures to tell a story.

Me: Hsiang, what does 'den' mean at the end of ur story there?

Hsiang: the end

I just have to laugh! Isn't he the best!!

-----

If you remember this then you'd know this is definitely not written by me. The 'Me' and 'I' above refer to my wifey.

Potong Stim

Wifey and I were discussing whether to let our elder son attend full day kindergarten next year instead of the half day session he is doing now.

When I asked what are the concerns, I was rather shocked that cost came up as one of them.

We are talking about an increase of about RM300 per month, and wifey, the finance manager, informed me that no, some months we do not have RM300 left.

Bummer.

I am seriously disheartened.

Working like a cow yet I can't even afford to send my son to a full day kindergarten, this is extremely demoralising for parents who have decided to put our children first.

I am not sure if we could live any more frugally than we do now to cough up the money. Guess I better pray the bonus will cover it or I have to start digging into our saving, either bank or what little amount of shares I have.

Bollocks. Just bollocks.

For those who don't understand the Malay language, which is quite a number considering we can count with one hand the countries that use this language, potong stim is literally 'cut steam'.

Potong stim means killing joy, dispiriting, demoralising, disheartening.

Gooder

While I was having lunch today, His Royal Highness Boy King Hsiang came into the kitchen after his afternoon shower.

Papa, what are you eating?

Noodle. You had noodle for lunch as well, right?

Ya, it's good.

Papa, you can put ketchup in the noddle, then it will be gooder.

Better, Hsiang, not gooder. Good, better, best.

Good, gooder, best.

Not gooder, better. Good, better, best.

Good, better, best.

That's right. Good, better, best.

Good, better, best.

Good boy.

Vocabulary Lesson with CK (January 11)

knackered adjective

Haven't done a vocabulary lesson for a long while now (good job slacker, +1 slacker point! ^_^).

Initially was just going to titled the entry with "Knackered" and then go on with my grumbling, but since I intended to explain that word, so might as well make it a vocabulary lesson. =)

I learned this adjective while I was in the UK, it means very tired, or extremely exhausted.

And yes, I want to gripe about being very tired lately, have been extremely busy since I was back from the business trip more than a month ago.

Still have to burn the midnight oil tonight to complete the report which sums up all the hard, frantic work since the trip. I am truely fatigued and looking forward to the Chinese New Year holiday, goodness knows I need the break.

Anyway, learning should be fun, so let's forget about my whine and go back to the lesson.

Now, think of a thick British accent saying "Good grief, I am knackered!"

Yes, it sounds like "naked". =P

Vocabulary Lesson with CK (March 09)

Overheard in the lift a few days ago, I was in the lift with a lady who was talking loudly on her mobile phone.

"What? You think I am your secretary ah?
*brief pause*
I am your SEXitary!"

*awkward silence when lady realised she has spoken out loud*

*more awkward silence while lady pretended to concentrate on listening, acting a bit too intently*

To spare her I looked down at my shoes and avoided any eye contact until she reached her floor and hurried out of the lift.

So there you go ladies and gentlemen, a new vocabulary: sexitary noun.

Since a secretary is one who keeps records, takes notes and handles general clerical work, I suppose a sexitary is either a sexy secretary, or one who keeps your bed warm, takes you in, and handles general shafting and rubbing work.

Or both.

字汇 (December 08)

bollocks noun

Bollocks, the "coconuts" a Sarawakian blogger often mentions about.

No, it's not a fruit, nor is it tumour shaped like coconut growing out of a body.

It's the male sex and endocrine gland that produces sperm and male sex hormones, as shown in the image below.

18SX warning! Look away if you take offend seeing perfectly normal body part.

Bollock = "balls", also boringly properly known as the testicles.

Bollocks is often used to express frustration, or meaning nonsense or bullshit.

For example: "that's just complete bollocks!"

Bollocks is my word of choice to replace "shit", or "damn", thanks to Kate Winslet in The Holiday. It's a nice movie.

See the movie clip below, Kate said it at the very end.

Vocabulary Lesson with CK (August 08)

pwn verb

Pwn is a slang derived from "own", it's believed to be originated from a typo since O and P are next to each other on a standard English keyboard.

Pwn is used widely in online gaming community when one has defeated the opponent by a large margin. The term carries with it a taunting element, often use to humiliate a soundly defeated opponent.

For example:
Lin Dan totally pwned Chong Wei in the badminton final.

pwnage is the noun version.

Happy 51st Merdeka, Malaysia!

May we develop and prosper and be rid of idiotic racists like Ahmad Ismail (who still hasn't apologised for his derogatory remark saying Malaysian Chinese are "squatters" in the country).

noob noun

Noob, or newbie, is a slang commonly used in online games or internet activities to describe clueless newcomer.

It's usually used as an insult, but the term can also be used in a non-derogatory context.

Was wondering whether to post a book review, a funny picture entry, or a vocabulary lesson for the last entry of July.

Since I am still about 60 pages to the end of the novel I am reading, and have only been reading that one book this month, book review is out.

Done the images for the funny picture entry, but decided it best to hold on to that first since I used this noob term in that entry.

I actually have another vocabulary entry readied for this month, but to cater for the funny picture entry, it's this word instead for today. =)

Spud noun

A spud is a gardening tool similar to a narrow spade, used for cutting the roots of weeds, et cetera.

Of course if it only has that meaning, it would not be in my vocabulary lesson.

=P

A spud is also a...

Wait, there's more!

The following conversation was how I came to know the word spud. It's a conversation that happened a few years ago when I was still in England, between my (then) girl friend and a female friend of ours, a British lady younger than us, married.

The ladies were talking about men, I was present but they simply ignored me and chatted as if I wasn't there.

"Some are gorgeous, some are great fun, but when it comes to getting married and settling down, it's still the plain, honest, nerdy, bookwormy type that's more secure."

"Yea, the spuds like Tim and CK."

(Oi! I am standing beside you ladies!)

So there, I am a spud.

Er... yay? =\

Vocabulary Lesson with CK

I have used "damnit" to mean damn it for ages, and I just realised it's a misspelling. It should be "dammit".

I was hoping Wiktionary got it wrong so I checked my good old Oxford dictionary too.

It's really "dammit".

Dammit!
