Finally

Twelve days after the launch of Diablo IV second expansion: Lord of Hatred, I have finally completed the campaign.

I know there are many who bragged about completing the campaign, getting to max level, end game and all that in a few hours on launch day. Good for you, but as someone who loves the lore and enjoys the details, no thanks.

I am a slow gamer and proud of it, hahaha! =P

Sure am glad I am done with the campaign, mightily curious how Blizzard will continue the story? Is it going to be about another Prime Evil now?

Until the next lore update though, time for me to get myself familiar with the new features in this expansion.

And to complete the season journey.

Hope I will have enough game time for that, and not ending up with a mad rush that's totally not my way of having fun playing a game.

Diablo IV Lord of Hatred

Diablo IV second expansion: Lord of Hatred has arrived!

I have pre-purchased it a while back so I had played one of the two new classes in this expansion: the Paladin. So, like many others, I will be playing the new Warlock class this season.

Many new and changed things besides the new classes in this expansion. There is the continuation of the storyline in a new region. The level cap is raised to 70. The Horadric Cube is back, as well as set items.

Skill trees got overhauled. End game is supposedly more fun now, with a War Plan system to help organise the activities and earn rewards. Not sure what the fuss is about loot, but Blizzard said the new Loot Filter is much asked for.

Also not sure why Blizzard has to include fishing in so many of its games, but ya, players can fish in Diablo IV now. For the record I continue to ignore the fishing in Diablo Immortal since it was introduced, however long ago that was.

Here's hoping I have time to enjoy the game.

Diablo IV season 11 and new expansion

Diablo IV season 11: Divine Intervention has started. Besides seasonal perks, defensive stats have changed, potion has changed, Tempering and Masterworking have changed, renown is Eternal realm only, season journey has changed, and monsters have new behaviour.

Blizzard has also announced the new expansion, Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred, to be launched on 28th of April 2026, which can be pre-purchased now.

I played the Spiritborn in Season 10: Season of Infernal Chaos, and managed to complete it in time without too much of a grind, so it was on overall an enjoyable season for me.

I was pondering whether to play the Barbarian or the Sorcerer in season 11 a few days ago, a bit of dilemma, though probably leaning slightly towards the Barbarian.

But that is moot now, because the pre-purchase of Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred expansion grants player early access to one of the new classes in the expansion: the Paladin.

Yup, Paladin is back, and yes, we can play the class in Diablo IV season 11 now if we pre-purchase the new expansion.

So it's a no brainer for me, buying the expansion is inevitable since I am a diehard Diablo fan, and getting to play the new class now sealed the deal.

And yes, I am playing the Paladin in season 11. Like many others. =P

Nick of time

Just completed Diablo IV season 9: Sins of the Horadrim, with my druid.

Season 10: Season of Infernal Chaos, is starting in about 2 hours. That's how close I am cutting it.

Not by choice, I didn't get much time to play in this season, no thanks to the way too much of working overtime.

I almost despair to be honest, thinking I will not be able to complete the season journey this time. What with the last chapter of the journey has three quests tied to a specific dungeon run introduced in the season, that requires dungeon key to access, and Blizzard in their infinite wisdom has limited the dungeon key to drop in yet another specific sub-dungeon, with abysmal drop rate.

Just plain horrible game design.

Unfortunately, players need to complete at least one of those three quests in order to meet the minimum number of quests needed to complete the chapter. Again, bad game design.

By sheer dumb luck and a bit of determination I managed to complete one of those quests, barely made it to be honest with my wee druid, probably just seconds from failing the time limit.

I am mightily glad, and honestly, not really looking forward to the new season that's starting in about two hours. I simply don't have the time to play nowadays and I dread a repeat of this rushing to complete near the end of the season.

Embrace the beast within

Diablo IV season 9: Sins of the Horadrim has started a few days ago.

Been busy working overtime recently so haven't really got much game time, and since being hounded relentlessly these few weeks, I will be working overtime this weekend as well.

Meaning still not going to have much time for gaming for a while. Sad. =(

Anyway, I have decided to play the druid class in this season, as it has been a while since I last played the class back in season 1, like, two years ago.

To me, druid is about shapeshifting. Sure there is that nature magic spellcaster playstyle but shapeshifting is what makes druid unique. I am going to play a shapeshifting druid this season, werewolf and/or werebear. Hence the title of this entry.

Also, Diablo Immortal has just introduced the druid class as well, so expect to see a large amount of players and their familiar playing the druid in coming days, since knowing Blizzard, the newly introduced class will be overpowered until a few patches down the road.

Maybe I will class-change to druid in Diablo Immortal too, finally joining the bandwagon for once. Goodness knows I haven't even played the Blood Knight and the Tempest thus far.

Hmm... maybe I will do just that, embrace the beast within in both games.

Revisiting Sword Coast

Back in 2018, I reinstalled Baldur's Gate I and its expansion the Tales of the Sword Coast, intended to finally complete the expansion areas and get my character ready for Baldur's Gate II.

Let us just say that I still haven't played Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn and its expansion Throne of Bhaal, game that I bought like some twenty years ago. slacker point +1

What I remember is that I have made it to Baldur's Gate, my last save was just before I enter the city. My plan was to follow the main storyline to level up my characters, then to explore all the Tales of the Sword Coast quests and areas, then only go finish off the last boss to properly end Baldur's Gate I.

This blog entry in 2019 confirmed my goldfish memory is right for once. However, when I loaded my saved game, my party was not in front of Baldur's Gate, but in the wilderness in between Beregost and Nashkel. At least the journal says I am in chapter 5.

Probably didn't save the last saved game files (changed computer since), or perhaps this is indeed the latest progress because my main character is a human thief (with stats to dual class to mage) and no longer the half elf mage/thief multiclass.

Anyway, so ya, questing in Sword Coast once again. One can always hope that this time will be the time that I finally complete the Tales of the Sword Coast, and am ready for Baldur's Gate II.

Slacker time applies, as always.

More like work

So Raya is today, Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri!

Third day of my four days long weekend, doing pretty well on the resting part, not so well on the complete Diablo IV season journey part.

There are seven chapters in the season journey, I have actually completed the minimum requirement for the seventh chapter but am still stuck at chapter six.

Simply because it's either party-up and kill some bosses, or grind like no tomorrow.

No thank you to party-up, I like to play it solo in my own sweet time and my own sweet pace, no need for hormonal potty mouth teenagers with anger management issue to spoil my fun.

I play game to have fun, so I can never understand my elder son's so called "gaming" when he just worked himself up to a rage and swear loudly and continuously, every single time. Stress and frustration are all I see, I don't see any fun or enjoyment. And he is actually bringing stress and frustration to all nearby, with his loud and constant swearing and complaining.

But yea, that's fun to him, he keeps going back to it like a true addict that he is.

Anyway, I have not completed the sixth chapter because I am gated by the grind, and grind is not fun. Grind is more like boring chore, like work. Nothing enjoyable about that.

Have to grit my teeth and bare it though, so close to finishing the season journey now. It's just a shame it's no longer enjoyable, just boring grind. You failed, Blizzard.

SoulBot-VIII

SoulBot-V, the gaming machine built in 2014, has finally been put to rest after its faithful service all these years.

Like I mentioned in the previous entry, it has outlast SoulBot-VI, the NUC I bought for wifey in 2017. Yes I know, the Skull Canyon NUC is not really a gaming machine but I just named all the computers I owned SoulBot anyway. =P

So, I bought a Lenovo ThinkCentre M70t Gen 5 to replace SoulBot-V. It arrived a few days ago but I only really had time to do the necessary hardware installation, software installation and set up yesterday (Saturday), been working way too many overtime lately...

While wifey is indifferent to the delay, the kids were dying from not being able to play games. Funny, it's supposed to be wifey's computer.

Following my naming convention, this new computer is called SoulBot-VIII. It has 14th Gen Intel Core i5 CPU and 16GB of DDR5-4800MHz memory. I opted for a 512GB SSD as primary harddrive for all the programs and games, and installed a 3.5" 500GB and a 2.5" 256GB SATA harddrives myself for wifey and the kids to use as data storage.

I also bought an Intel ARC A750 graphics card, thinking to install that into the system, not knowing this ThinkCentre M70t is actually a mini computer that cannot fit in a full-sized graphics card.

My bad. So much for wanting to make the kids happy with an upgrade in graphics card compared to when they played on SoulBot-V, oh well.

Since it's a shorter graphics card, I salvaged the GeForce GTX 1050Ti from SoulBot-V and installed it into the new computer instead. Sorry kids, no upgrade in graphics card.

In fact, the 500GB SATA harddrive is also from SoulBot-V, after I copied the necessary data, I formatted it and repurposed it as a data drive instead of an operating system drive.

May you rest in pieces, SoulBot-V.

Finally got everything installed and set up yesterday evening, and handed over to wifey her new computer. She hasn't used it yet thus far, the elder son is the first to use it instead. First thing he asked after waking up this morning is whether the games are installed, so I proceeded to do that and as soon as I am done he has been playing till now. Oh well.

As a thermal engineer, it crossed my mind that the existing cooling solution for the mini system may be a bit lacking after I installed all those additional hardware. I have asked the kids to keep an eye out if they encounter temperature issue while they game.

Resurrected & Remastered

Back in 1998, when the original StarCraft came out, I bought a copy, the good old CD version. Then later, when Blizzard released a StarCraft and its expansion BroodWar combo pack, I bought that too. So I have two copies of StarCraft and one copy of StarCraft: BroodWar.

Fast forward a couple of years, when Diablo II was released in 2000, I bought two copies, so I could play with my girlfriend then, who has since become ex-girlfriend after promoted to wife. Then one year later in 2001, Blizzard released Diablo II expansion: Lord of Destruction, which I duly bought two copies as well.

Now in 2025, after twenty odd years, because they are on 50% and 60% discounts, I bought StarCraft: Remastered and Diablo II: Resurrected. Basically the upgraded graphics version of the same games that run friendlier on modern computer.

For StarCraft: Remastered, the in game graphics are nicer, but Blizzard did not touched up the cutscene cinematics. I am rather disappointed, as Blizzard cinematics are usually pretty impressive.

For that reason, I decided to give my limited game time to Diablo II: Resurrected first, because it has upgraded cutscene cinematics! =P

Strange how just an uplifted graphics can make an old game feels like a new game. I guess probably because Diablo II gameplay stood the test of time, but I could be biased since I am a Diablo fan.

Diablo I absolutely left its impression, the first ever computer game that I played for a long time, the turning point when I truly became a gamer, and the reason why I bought every Diablo game since.

So ya, bought two old games in new skin, so to speak, and I am enjoying the Diablo II: Resurrected experience thus far. =)

Chugging along

SoulBot-V, my gaming machine built in 2014, decided to stop booting up today.

Kid was still using it to play game yesterday and didn't noticed anything strange, but today it just stopped working.

I know it is an old computer, the original graphics card has died and has been replaced. Probably some other components as well that had to be replaced but I cannot remember.

To give it credit, it already outlived SoulBot-VI, the NUC I bought in 2017, which the motherboard died.

Anyway, with my rudimentary debug skill, managed to narrow down the problem to memory related, thanks to the labelled LED on the motherboard. Then through trial and error of removing the memory module, clean with eraser, putting it back, still failed, removing it again and putting it in another slot, managed to get the computer working again.

So good old SoulBot-V is still up and chugging along, but I know it's just a matter of time.

Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred

Diablo IV first expansion: Vessel of Hatred, has gone live on 8th of October 2024, and with it the sixth season: Season of the Hatred Rising, has begun.

It's called the first expansion, so I guess Blizzard has plan for more expansion for the game. Well, as long as they keep making good games, they can keep earning my money.

Vessel of Hatred continues the storyline of the core Diablo IV game, there is a new class, a new region, and many changes. Haven't played enough to comment on whether they are good or bad changes.

Like many others, I am trying out the new Spiritborn class, but unlike those who sped through everything in order to reach the maximum character level in whatever small number of hours, I am playing the game in my usual casual and slow pace, enjoying the storyline and exploration.

I am in no rush, each to his or her own, but rushing to maximum character level is not my cup of tea. I am enjoying the lore, and appreciating all those Diablo II stuff they linked and referred to in this Diablo IV expansion. They brought back fond memories.

There seemed to be more Diablo II reference or continuation compared to Diablo III, hmm...

Anyway, enjoying the game thus far, still a long way to go in terms of storyline and season journey progression, but I am having fun, and that's all that matters.

Made it, barely

After a few days of absolutely unhealthy amount of gaming, I finally completed the season journal for Diablo IV fifth season: Season of the Infernal Hordes.

Had to go through this unfun time no thanks to the short season. If it's the usual three months I am sure I can make it in the usual fun way, as gaming should be.

Managed to complete most of the season journal quests as part of levelling to, or shortly after reaching, character level 100. That is good game design, so credit to Blizzard on that.

Each chapter of the season journal requires a certain minimum number of quests completion in order to proceed to the next chapter, giving players some semblance of choice. However, I hit a wall when I got to the final chapter of the season journal. It needs a minimum of 9 quests out of 11 to complete the chapter, and I managed to complete 8 without much trouble. The three quests left though, are basically gear level check, and are gated behind tedious and unfun grind-fest.

Now that is horrible game design, shame on you, Blizzard, shame on you!

To be honest, even if I had one more month to play leisurely in enjoyable fashion (as playing game should be!), I still would have hated the grind. Grind to get suitable end game gears, which is RNG-based. Grind in The Pit to get end game Masterworking material to upgrade the gear, which also has RNG-based portion. And grind to get the shards to open portal to go into The Pit... Argh!!!

Honestly I am so sick of the game now after days of tedious unfun grind.

Anyway, I managed to solo three of the five level 160 Fell Council of Zakarum, the high priests corrupted by Mephisto we first encountered in Diablo II, now brought back into Diablo IV season 5. Took me many minutes as I am poorly geared, I simply could not stomach the grind anymore so I did the quest under-geared. Their obscenely high resistance to damage (or perhaps because I was under-geared) resulted in way too long a fight.

Nail-biting too as I was down to my final chance after dying twice before even getting to them, but I prevailed. That's the quest I needed to complete the final chapter of the season journal. The other two quests are to face level 200 bosses. Forget it, because I don't find the grind for gear check fun.

That's season 5 done for me. I need to break from Diablo IV for now until the expansion comes out, which is just in a few days time, not long enough a break from this unfun episode.

Out of time

The fifth season for Diablo IV, named Season of the Infernal Hordes, started in early August.

The thing is, it's a short season, only two months instead of the usual three. It's ending in early October and I am far from completing the season journal.

No thanks to the unhealthy amount of working overtime, and the constant fatigue state that I am in nowadays. Either I am too busy working, or I am too tired to play. Sad.

Anyway, I am playing the Sorcerer for this season, a Chain Lightning build. I am not even at the max character level of 100 yet, and I only have one week left.

One week till season ends and the launch of Diablo IV expansion, the Vessel of Hatred.

I am out of time!

Rat race results

The Risk and Rally event in Diablo Immortal has ended a few days ago.

I did surprisingly well and managed to secure the second place among the other wizard players competing in the event.

Woot! Second place!

By the end of the event I was 20 points behind the player in the first place, meaning in four dungeon runs I was not in the same score group of the first place player. Basically that means I wasn't in the top three shortest time group in those four dungeon runs, but was in the top 4th to 20th shortest time group instead.

Like I mentioned in the previous blog entry, the playing field for the event was fairly, but not totally, even. The Pay to Win players still have advantages of one-shot killing everything including the bosses, and whatever useful benefits from the high level 5 stars legendary gems over a Free to Play player like me.

First place player, 5k Resonance.

The first place player has 5k Resonance and fully upgraded primary gears. The third place player has 4k Resonance, also with fully upgraded primary gears. Those Resonance levels at this time of the game life are only achievable by Pay to Win players.

Third place player, 4k Resonance.

Resonance is a multiplier for primary gears base attributes, namely damage and life. So higher Resonance means higher damage and life.

Playing since Diablo Immortal launched on PC as a Free to Play player, I currently have 1.5k Resonance. I think it's reasonable at this point of time for Free to Play player to get up to 2k Resonance, but that's just my guess.

My 1.5k Resonance.

So I think I have proudly represented the Free to Play players in this Risk and Rally event, sure feels good to beat a 4k Resonance player, probably many more players with higher Resonance than mine down the ranks but I only checked the top three.

Rat race

So Diablo Immortal has this Risk and Rally event happening now that is basically a race for fastest solo dungeon clear.

Usually I do not care about this kind of events since I am a Free to Play player, and the game is primarily for Pay to Win players.

However, there is a nice twist this time, the game tries to level the playing field in the sense that the event can be done in any difficulty, so naturally everyone will pick the lowest difficulty. The event description actually recommends this as well!

In the lowest difficulty where monsters die easily, usually with just one hit, the Pay to Win massive killing power simply becomes overkill. Okay, maybe still beneficial in killing tougher bosses but Free to Play players can handle the bosses as well, perhaps with just a few more hits.

The time for that few more hits probably means a few seconds longer, which actually is a big deal in the top few ranks but at least the playing field is not overly skewed towards the Pay to Win players in this event.

Every twelve hours there is a change in dungeon, and a score will be given to players based on their fastest clear time, as well as some token reward. The ranking is class specific so that removes the class imbalance issue, and the score from each dungeon change is cumulative until the end of the event. At the end of the event, players are awarded differently according to their final ranking, with the top three having the best award.

The thing is, competition is fierce, and missing any dungeon on the twelve hours time frame means you are 50 points behind the top score player, which is a huge deal as score is on a 5 points increment. Missing any twelve hours dungeon race pretty much means you are out of the race, well, at least out of the top 50 ranks, probably more.

Not surprisingly, the top few high score players are fairly consistent, most likely the Pay to Win players with all sorts of gears and legendary gems to min-max. But surprisingly, I am doing fairly well thus far, but of course it's just a few days since the start of the event, I am sure more and more Pay To Win players will overtake my score as the days go by. The event ends on 11th of August, way too long to go for my liking.

Also I am not sure if I can keep up with the twelve hours dungeon change demand outside of weekend, so perhaps I will be out of this rat race sooner than I expected. Oh well.

Azeroth beckons

I am weak. I gave in to temptation and bought the bundle on the very last day it's on offer.

Goodness knows I don't have the time to truly enjoy this, I just hope whatever available snippet of game time I can manage in the coming two months can amount to something worthwhile.

When I logged on earlier, the latency to the servers I have characters on were not good, so that's almost like an instant regret. Will see if it's any better later, as I have just rebooted the modem and router.

My last subscription ended in August of 2021, there was a three days then another seven days free game time since then till now, but those don't count, so it has been close to three years since I last properly played World of Warcraft.

Well, Azeroth beckons once again, I just hope the latency can at least be playable without too much frustration.

And that I can have enough play time to achieve something meaningful.

World of Warcraft bundle

Another public service for my love of World of Warcraft.

World of Warcraft latest expansion: The War Within will launch on 26th of August 2024.

There is a Welcome to Azeroth 60 days game time + Dragonflight (current expansion) + level 60 character boost bundle available now until 23rd of June 2024.

Granted that usually when a new expansion launches, the old expansions become free to play as long as players have game time, so this bundle has most value for money for those who have not played World of Warcraft before.

Having said that, just getting it for the 60 days game time alone is already a good deal, as it's priced lower than the monthly subscription, so the level 60 character boost is a bonus, and the Dragonflight expansion is like a two months early access for those who don't have that expansion. Like me.

Tempting as it is for me, since I have bought all the expansions prior to Dragonflight, I simply cannot justify the purchase as I have no time to play. Well, no meaningful long stretch of time to play. And World of Warcraft requires a lot of time. That I know.

If the game time tracks actual playing time like what Blizzard is doing with the current Diablo Immortal Goblin's Plunder buff, I would buy the bundle without a second thought. Same with maintaining a subscription, if it counts actual game time. Oh well.

Diablo IV first expansion

Diablo IV first expansion, Vessel of Hatred, will be here on 8th of October 2024.

It will continue the main storyline with new area: the jungle of Nahantu, as well as a new class: the Spiritborn.

Besides the new area and new class, players will be able to recruit Mercenaries to fight alongside with, and there will be new end game activity: multi-faceted dungeon that requires players to team up to take on the challenge.

Along with the announcement of the expansion, there is immediate change implemented to the base game in the form of Pets that will aid players in loot pickup. All players get a free pet dog, claimable through a simple quest in the first major town Kyovashad, it can then be equipped using the wardrobe.

Pre-purchase Vessel of Hatred now will let player use the additional pets, mount and cosmetic in the game immediately. Different game editions come with different stuff, the standard edition contains the expansion, a snow leopard pet, and a legendary gem for Diablo Immortal.

No, Blizzard does not pay me to advertise for them, this is just a public service for my love of the Diablo game.

Diablo IV fourth season

The fourth season for Diablo IV, named Loot Reborn, has begun a few days ago.

For season three, I managed to reach max character level 100 with my Bone Spirit Necromancer, and completed all chapters of season three journal, albeit not all the quests of all chapters as I gave up on bosses that one shot me.

Unlike the previous three seasons, season four: Loot Reborn is about quality of life improvement. Items are simpler to sort through now, decision is a lot more straight forward as items pretty much only drop with "useful" statistics. Doesn't mean everyone will be the same now though, as customisation is done through the new Tempering and in end game, the Masterworking systems, which let the players choose what they want to add to their items, of course with the usual RNG and limit on number of attempt so players will keep looking for more loot.

Codex of Power is totally reworked, the new system is so much better! Gone are the days where we hoard items with useful or max statistics enchantment, or filled our stash with the extracted version. The best version of any enchantment is saved in Codex of Power now, and can be repeatedly imprinted to our item. This is such a wonderful change!

Helltide is available in all world tiers in this new season, with changes made to it that made it more fun and a fantastic place to power-level. We can jump straight in at level 1. Also there is the Iron Wolves questline that is tied to Helltide.

Mount can be spurred to run faster in towns now as well. No idea why they didn't allowed it in the first place.

I am having fun thus far with my Barbarian. As usual, hope I have sufficient game time to complete the season journal, and experience the new end game.

Diablo Immortal: back to wizard

Ya, still playing Diablo Immortal, despite having Diablo IV.

Diablo Immortal caters better for short game time availability compared to Diablo IV, and I suppose I am less attached to my Diablo Immortal characters compared to my Diablo IV characters.

Perhaps because Diablo IV character development has a definite end game, and requires investment in time that I don't usually have, while I have already accepted the fact that Diablo Immortal is a pay to win (P2W) game with no end game but with continuously increasing level cap so people will keep paying to keep up.

Since I do not support that kind of game business model, I am not spending in Diablo Immortal, so I do not expect to have a fair playing field compared to those who spent, and that somehow created the detachment to my character and the game. It's just a quick fix game for me.

Anyway, I started Diablo Immortal with my favourite wizard class, then I created another character in another server as a monk. The monk was supposed to be the character I play with my family, but none of them wanted to play, so eventually the character was left to gather dust.

I also briefly tried the crusader class, but find playing that class with keyboard and mouse a bit awkward. I guess they design the class with controller in mind.

Then I switched my wizard to barbarian, while it was fun to play melee, the difference in range class versus melee class as a free to play (F2P) player in player versus player (PvP) match was amplified, while I can still play support as a range class in PvP where those P2W just mow down the F2P players, I struggled to contribute as a barbarian. That was before Blizzard group players according to their resonance, truth is they are still not doing a very good job with the resonance grouping now but at least it's slightly better than before.

Resonance is a statistic crucial in PvP, players can only realistically get it high enough with spending a lot of money. At the time of writing this, a decked out P2W player will have around 8000 resonance and a F2P player playing since the launch of the game will have around 1000 to 1500.

Anyway, I soon switched the barbarian to necromancer, then to demon hunter. I was no longer in an active clan while I switched to demon hunter, and no longer actively playing the game. I stayed as demon hunter for quite some time though, so eventually I collected all the essences for the class available to my unlocked difficulties, and that was my cue that it's time to change class.

There is that blood knight class that I have not tried, but blood knight feels too overpowered to me, and I am the kind of player who is not attracted to overpowered class, I prefer player skill to overcome challenges instead of the "I win" button.

So I went back to wizard, and with the new essences collected so far, I am finding new ways to play the class, which is keeping the game interesting for me.

Guess I will still be playing Diablo Immortal for a while, albeit not actively.
