Vocabulary Lesson with CK (August 08)

pwn verb

Pwn is a slang derived from "own", it's believed to be originated from a typo since O and P are next to each other on a standard English keyboard.

Pwn is used widely in online gaming community when one has defeated the opponent by a large margin. The term carries with it a taunting element, often use to humiliate a soundly defeated opponent.

For example:
Lin Dan totally pwned Chong Wei in the badminton final.

pwnage is the noun version.

Happy 51st Merdeka, Malaysia!

May we develop and prosper and be rid of idiotic racists like Ahmad Ismail (who still hasn't apologised for his derogatory remark saying Malaysian Chinese are "squatters" in the country).

You and I

You and I
Twelve years together
Ninety nine months of courtship before we tied the knot
For a few years we enjoyed our married life, just the two of us
Then we decided to start a family
And we're finally blessed with Hsiang
Our centre of love, our royal highness, our joy
Through the ups and downs our bond strengthened
You and I, we are one
So here's to us, and to the many more years to come

Paintball is Not Fashion Show

Quoted the words from a well respected, beloved, experienced veteran that is more like a superior than colleague and... kena.

Honestly, I know we need approval, and that's what the e-mail was about after all leh. Kena anyway.

Alrighty.

-----

So, want to go eh? I know I know, get approval first! Haha, I learned liao... kena.

What?!?! But... but...

Okay okay, sure can go, I asked liao. No problemo, we have spare capacity anyway... kena.

Missing the point? Don't want to go liao. Huh?!?!

You know, I suck BIG time at social and people skill, gimme a break, okay? I should just stick to planning and organising and let someone else do the communication.

-----

Let's see, if we sort the team using the last number of the ID sure people cannot say we not fair kua? Damn cannot, number doesn't worked out and if we do selective adjustment sure people say we unfair one.

Hmm... let's sort by group then by name then assign the team top down. Woot! We got nice mixture of people from all groups, this sure promotes teambuilding liao kua?

Kena.

Not randomised? Sharp shooter not in your team? You mean you want randomisation with sharp shooter in your team? But... but...

-----

Fine fine, bumps in the process, not unexpected but doesn't mean I have to like it.

The killer though, is after you toiled through the grunt work and having to wear fire resistance titanium reinforced Kevlar underwear (geez I have to go patent this) to withstand all the unpleasantness, your fellow grateful colleague said...

"Not joining, I don't have a shirt to wear for paintball."

...

The joys of organising. It's so much fun I must limit myself else I might get overdosed and like, die.

Becoming so sarcastic and cynical lately... what?

Fine fine, becoming even more sarcastic and cynical lately, and so many rant posts these few days. Not good. Me no likey. Should stop being involved in this.

Bad Timing

Found out about the pulled-in date for the drop in petrol price ten minutes after I filled my tank full.

The dolt trying to fool us it's not because of the coming election was just adding salt to injury. Stop treating us as if we have your level of intelligence.

We are not idiots.

-----

Thought we had a month still for planning and executing the teambuilding event, only to realise belatedly that the fasting month is almost upon us and the budget will expire by the end of the fasting month.

Scrambled to put things together in a week and of course, crucial decision makers are out of office and yea, raining season has begun and we are doing an outdoor event.

-----

You know, it's always when you are already up to the neck with work that additional tasks come pouring in.

I... need... a... breather...

Efficiency

Time to plan an outing event covering...
  • around 40 people
  • an outdoor activity
  • a meal
  • budget
  • logistics
  • transportation
... less than an hour.

Time for the plan to go through the approval chain hierarchy and managerial buy-off...

...

... ...

... ... ...

... ... ... ...

... I don't know, am still waiting. I do know not to hold my breath though. =)

By the time the response comes and after all the likely "suggested modifications", which probably come in several versions spaced a few weeks apart, sometimes contradicting and/or doesn't make much sense, are implemented, it's probably past the quarterly event budget allowance date so it's an automatic no go.

Er, yippie?

If I lost my job because of this post I know either some managers were reading this or some colleague thought it's funny to tell them... =P

>.<

Oh.

My.

Goodness.

I wish I hadn't watched the Olympic badminton man single final now.

So... *sigh*

So... *sigh~*

So...

*SIGH~*

I was hoping for an entertaining, breath holding, nail biting, evenly skilled battle of badminton champions.

What I got instead was frustrating mistakes, jaw dropping one sided domination of the match.

Congratulations to Lin Dan for a well played game, probably a walk in the park for you, you totally pwned my fellow countryman.

Chong Wei, er... probably not the best time to display our Malaysian generosity and courtesy, even if you were facing the host country, no need to give face one!

Oh well, now give me back that hour of my life.

Scribbles

Just felt like scribbling, so let's see what flows through my mind at this moment...

Meh! I am so tired. So much to do, so little time. Where is my simple life?

Note to self: grab a handful of bubble gums to bring to office.

Ooh, that news about the fatality involving motorcycles, where did I put that piece of note... Aha! First 6 months of 2007, 211 deaths involving motorcycles. First 6 months of 2008, 1939 deaths involving motorcycles. The rempit still go vroom vroom passed where I stay frequently, especially at weekends, throwing away their lives (they can crash and burn and rot in hell for all I care) and endangering the other road users. Meh!

Damn haze, I am constantly suffering from nose and throat problems these few days. Government prefers to disgrace our country talking about brokeback mountain scam instead of actually doing anything of real concern though.

Discussion on getting the PhD degree flared up, a friend was trying to get me to do a study group kind of thing, a few hours every few days in the library to get the thesis done. More friends wanted to use their frequent flyer miles to get the ticket for me to fly to England. I appreciate the thoughts, honestly. But it's a stressful thing for me, and all I want now is really just a simple life.

Heard from a friend out of the blue. Thought it's one of those many friends who once I was out of their sight, I was also out of their mind, so I was pleasantly surprised. Since prior attempts at keeping the communication had not been reciprocated, it felt kind of like lost and found. I am guessing the next contact will be after six months, heh.

Me: Mirror mirror on the wall, when is Hsiang Hsiang going to call me papa?
Mirror: Dream on.
Me: =\

Caveman versus Mobile Phone

May I present to you a rare sight of a caveman using a mobile phone...

yea, caveman was totally lost

On the other hand, His Royal Highness King baby Hsiang is a natural.

geez, babies nowadays sure are advanced

I suppose only those who know me well enough will get this.

You see, I don't have a mobile phone. Seriously, I am not kidding.

Almost everyone gave me the ludicrous look when I said that, as if I was from outer space or something.

No lar, I am not from outer space lar! I am just a caveman preferring the paper cups and string technology or the pigeon. =) Smoke signal pollutes the air so I stay clear. I may be a caveman but I am environmentally friendly, okay? =P

It's my choice to stay mobile phone-less. I simply don't find the need* to have one. Many people say they cannot live without mobile phone, I find that... funny. I grew up without a mobile phone and so far I am still alive and well, thank you very much. =P

I am just not a phone lover.

There is a saying that if a joke needed explaining, it's no longer funny.

Yea, I am a lousy joker.

* may well need to commute long distance in the future, will consider a mobile phone then... *gasp!*

I read a movie

I finished reading a movie yesterday night.

Well, a book really but it sure felt like I have just read a movie, and a bloody good movie too.

Rainbow Six by Tom Clancy, a hefty novel a few pages shy of 900 packed full of actions and gripping story line.

It's about anti-terrorists versus terrorists. The good guys were a bunch of special operation super agents which like nothing more than training, training, and more training everyday to keep them always at their peak.

The bad guys were bank robbers and extremists wanting to make a statement or demand, unknowingly manipulated by extremely rich and fanatic environmentalists.

The treehuggers ultimate goal was rather bone chilling, a massacre of such enormous magnitude that it boggled my mind just reading about it. Of course, like all extremists, their goal made perfect sense to them (and them alone). Those who didn't agree with their view or stood in their way would just, well, be taken care of in one way or another.

Usually nasty, and often permanent.

The story was well written, event flow was smooth and each encounter described so well that images flashed in my mind, as if I was watching them happen.

Great read.

In fact, Tom Clancy's story is so good that there is a series of identically titled Rainbow Six games, as well as games like Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon which are based on his writing.
