Immigration office efficiency

Both my driving license and my passport expired in May, bad timing really since workload is a bit crazy lately. But oh well, gotta be done.

I posted about my JPJ experience a few days back, here's the Immigration office's.

27th May 2015, thanks to a 07:00 hours meeting that got cancelled at some ungodly hour between midnight and dawn, and the strangely lack of other morning meetings thereafter, I made an impromptu decision to go renew my expired passport, as I will be needing it soon.

I arrived at the Immigration office at 07:41 hours. There was a queue that stretched all the way to the outside of the building.

At 07:47 hours, I finally got to the front of the queue and got my number. 6 minutes for the first step. I was number #1074, and they were serving number #1008 then.

The Immigration office working hours start from 07:30 hours, so I was there 11 minutes after the door opened, and there were 73 people in front of me, wow... *coughkiasu *cough*

After observing the process for a while, I deduced that I would probably be served some time around 09:30 hours, so I left the building and went for breakfast.

Back to the Immigration office at 08:20 hours after a leisurely breakfast, they were serving number #1025 then. It's going to be a long wait. -_-

There are four counters with photo booth, but at most two of them were manned that morning, often just one, while those of us waiting there started to sprout mushrooms.

At 09:52 hours, they were serving #1064. My brain has partially rotted from boredom and the waste of time.

Finally at 10:00 hours my number was called. Getting my thumbs printed, photo taken, and document signed took 6 minutes. That's step two done, 2 hours and 19 minutes after step one.

Then I was asked to wait again for payment. Seriously? You can't just let me pay there and then? Need to create a job position and an extra step for that? Pfft!

So again I waited, and thank all that's holy, unholy, devilish and whatever it's not another few hours but just minutes. I was called at 10:17 hours, 11 minutes after step two. I paid and was done with step three under 1 minute.

The officer told me I had to wait for an hour, then go take another number and play the waiting game again to collect my passport. Even though I know I could collect my passport some other day, I asked again just to be safe and left.

I just ain't got the luxury of waiting and wasting another hour, and good thing I left then, because an impromptu meeting was called and I managed to join, albeit 20 minutes late. What's up with all these last minute meeting changes? >_<

Anyway, 07:41 to 10:18 hours, that's 2 hours and 37 minutes for the first three steps.

I didn't have time on the next day, so it's only on 29th of May that I went to collect my passport. After the morning meetings, of course.

Arrived 09:43 hours, surprisingly no queue. I got number #2065 and they were serving #2053 then. Step four done.

While waiting, I observed that three out of the four counters with photo booth were manned that day. One of them being the special counter for senior citizens, which I think should serve the normal citizens when there is no senior citizen around.

My number was called at 09:53 hours, and by 09:54 hours I was done with the thumb print, signature and passport collection. 11 minutes.

So, if we include the one hour wait, then the whole process for a single day collection would take 3 hours and 48 minutes. Actual time spent at the counter was 8 minutes, the remaining 3 hours and 40 minutes wasted on waiting.

Sucks. Big time.

Backlogs #2

Eleven months ago I posted this, I have intended to make this a series kind of thing, but slacker time happened so I am finally posting number two of the series today. slacker point +1

This one is dated 23rd of August 2012, and titled as ghost town.

As usual, you will need to know Hokkien and Manglish to understand this.

I think my lunch buddies or those closer colleague friends will be able to identify the person. ^_^

Why?

Some months ago...

Wifey: "It's papa's birthday tomorrow."

Young: "Why? Why he chooses tomorrow for his birthday?"

Wifey: *suppressing laughter* "He didn't choose, it's his birthday tomorrow, Young Young. Like yours is [day] of October, papa's [day] of [month].

Young: "Oh..."

JPJ efficiency

My driving license expired on 15th May 2015, I had no choice but to take off early from my crazy work schedule to go renew my driving license.

Arrived and took my ticket at 15:59 hours, I was number 1306, they were serving number 1292 at that time.

14 people before my turn.

My first step involved documentation check and payment, it was done by 16:18 hours.

19 minutes to serve 15 people. Average of 1 minute and 16 seconds to serve one customer, nice.

I was sent to another room for the second step, photo taking, which was done at 16:20 hours. 2 minutes after step one, nice.

The third and last step was to wait and collect my renewed driving license. Well, they made a new card for me actually, which I collected at 16:24 hours.

25 minutes for the whole process, not bad JPJ!

Could have been better if you had more than two counters serving the customer for this kind of request, and no need for the split room steps, just do it in one go. Half that time is reasonably achievable.

But not bad really, I honestly expected a lot more time wasted for this.

Exercise is good

Missed a few badminton sessions lately, no thanks to the inconvenience called work.

Well, not just normal work, but work that is currently on fire and being highly focused on. Some people in my company called it a 'task force', I called it deep shit.

Anyway, managed to go to both the badminton sessions this week, felt so good. =)

Exercise, sweating, and the laughter, make for good stress relief. Because of my craptastic skill, there are always laughter, and I laugh along with them. ^_^

I have always say, don't confuse passion with proficiency. Just because I like to do something doesn't mean I am good at it. =P

Anyway, feel a lot better after the sessions, physically and mentally.

All good, well, except that I stink horribly after sweating lots. I think my sweat is toxic or something. =P

Taming the inbox

This is seriously going to hurt my slacker extraordinaire reputation, but I have just shut down my laptop a few minutes ago after spending the whole day clearing my e-mails.

I admit that I have never been able to get my inbox under control, having more than 100 unread e-mails is considered the norm, I usually have close to 200 unread e-mails.

You see, I am a hands-on practical person, not a meeting person, not a desk worker, and definitely not one who's all talk and no walk.

Being in the lab or the production floor getting my hands dirty most of my working hours means I don't have much time checking my e-mails.

So I usually dedicate Friday afternoon to clear the 'soon to expire' unread e-mails. I would clear a week's worth of unread e-mails, so the next batch of unread e-mails would expire on Saturday of next week. Repeat this exercise weekly.

This means I am usually about one to two months out of date on most e-mails... -_-

Anyway, I took a break a few weeks ago so I don't get burned out and to recover from depression. Coupled that with the crazy workload once I resumed work, my inbox has simply gone wild.

I had more than 300 unread e-mails these few weeks, so I decided it's time I tame the inbox.

Worked till late on Friday and spent the whole of Saturday clearing my e-mails, and finally got my inbox under control, with single digit of unread e-mails, left unread because they are some heavy, important stuff.

Didn't really read all the e-mails, mind. Read most, deleted many, dispositioned some.

The inbox is finally tamed! I hope it will stay this way but I doubt it.

Working overtime to clear e-mails, sad but true. -_-

Random behaviour for May 2015

I did good for my April impromptu resolution. Out of the five times I went to lunch having not-so-economical rice in April since I posted the entry, I managed to have more vegetable than meat all five times. ^_^ feel good +1

6th, 7th, 13th, 14th and 27th of April were the five days I had not-so-economical rice for lunch, which begs the question what did I have for the other days? Hmm...

Anyway, for May 2015, starting after I post this, my impromptu resolution is: no Coke.

Because I can.

Er... can I? This is gonna be a tough one. >_<

This is a March 2013 creation.

When I was going through my archive preparing for this entry, I noticed I did not create any LEGO design for the workshop series throughout 2014. A whole year without creating new LEGO design, not good. =(

Should really pick this up again.

Anyway, here's the step by step instruction of building a fighter jet, designed by me. ^_^
