Vocabulary Lesson with CK (October 08)

bollocks noun

Bollocks, the "coconuts" a Sarawakian blogger often mentions about.

No, it's not a fruit, nor is it tumour shaped like coconut growing out of a body.

It's the male sex and endocrine gland that produces sperm and male sex hormones, as shown in the image below.

18SX warning! Look away if you take offend seeing perfectly normal body part.

Bollock = "balls", also boringly properly known as the testicles.

Bollocks is often used to express frustration, or meaning nonsense or bullshit.

For example: "that's just complete bollocks!"

Bollocks is my word of choice to replace "shit", or "damn", thanks to Kate Winslet in The Holiday. It's a nice movie.

See the movie clip below, Kate said it at the very end.

Me is Happy

Received my first department award today.

Happy happy! =D

I have received a few recognitions since joining the company but they were all related to minor stuff. Mostly as a token of gratitude for my involvement in organising the team building events, or helped out in a lab tidy up, or assisted in a sharing session, that sort of things.

Today though, I got a proper development project related award, even came with a plaque too.

Truth is, I felt a bit undeserving of the award. The title of the award implies to me it's technology development in mechanical and signal integrity.

I am a thermal engineer since I am hot. While I am on the team working on the same product, I have no direct contribution to the mechanical and signal integrity part of the development.

Guess I just got a tagged along award! =)

Oh, and no, I am not going to return the award. Nope. =P

Here's hoping there will be more to come and that I will be able to pull my weight by getting a thermal related award for the team.

Hey! I can always dream! =P

Anyway, me is happy.

To all the kiddies reading this, me is happy is improper, the proper way is I am happy.

May the Pink Force Be with You

Some of my colleagues are, erm... "pink", their sexual preference is ambiguous. You know, being heterosexual (sexually attracted to members of the opposite gender) as well as homosexual (sexually attracted to members of the same gender).

Maybe they are just acting heterosexual to cover up their true homosexual nature since Malaysia is such a closed-minded country, hmm...

Anyway, I have nothing against homosexuality, but I draw my line when they try to drag me over to the pink side.

Like this...

I am straight! You hear me? Straight!

On an unrelated note, recently there is a new saying started by yours truely *ehem*:
"May the Task Force be with you!"

Task Force is the term for the fire fighting focus team when things went wrong and need to be fixed IMMEDIATELY. It's nasty, unpleasant and a sure way to slim down.

7 Habits

I have attended quite a number of training courses and have a stack of certificates from those courses that issued one. The stack would have at least doubled if all the courses I attended issued a certificate.

But I am not here to compare number of certificates, they are just papers. Instead, I simply have to write about the three days course that I have just completed.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

There is a very well-known book of the same title, sold over 15 million copies as of the 2004 paperback edition, by the great man Stephen R. Covey, who also provides training courses.

I have heard of the book, never read the book, but I finally own a copy of the book now, thanks to my company. My company has certified instructors to teach the course and a class was available at the site I am working these past three days.

I signed up for the training course because I didn't want to be the only person left at my aisle of the office for the three days, since my colleagues had all signed up.

I am mightily glad I signed up, even though for the wrong reason.

The course was immensely beneficial and has profound impact.

I strive to be a better person, and this course has just provided me with a clear path and direction.

I am writing this as a record of, hopefully, the beginning of a better me.

Match sonar bearings and shoot, tubes 1 and 2, aye

Just finished a book by Tom Clancy titled SSN.

SSN stands for nuclear-powered attack submarine and the novel is based on a game of the same name.

Since it's based on a computer game, the chapters are according to the missions in the game, with increasingly difficult encounter.

The story described the encounters of a USA submarine called Cheyenne in a fictional war between the USA and China regarding a petroleum rich island (it's always about the oil, like in real life *cough*Iraq*cough*).

Written by an American, it's a no brainer to figure out who were the "bad guys" and who were the "good guys". ;)

Engaging story line and educational for me. I didn't know that torpodoes are wire-guided and I am still trying to imagine a long wire trailing behind a fired torpedo until it acquires its target and the submarine cuts the wire.

Guess I am just ignorant to weapons.

Probably due to my ignorance, things like Mk 48 ADCAP torpedoes, Tomahawks, and Harpoons intrigued and fascinate me.

Anyway, in the novel, there was such a huge technology gap between the two countries in war that the Cheyenne always detected the enemies while the Chinese was unable to detect it. Also, counter-measures or decoys launched by the Chinese never worked while the ones launched by the Cheyenne always worked.

When Cheyenne went 1 versus 7 submarines simultaneously and still got away unscratch it became a bit hao siao (unbelievable). By the end of the story, Cheyenne had destroyed 60+ enemies and suffered no damage.

Yea, only in American movies and books. =P

Calling Bookworms

Four novels this time, all from Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.

Nope, not the Dragonlance but the The Darksword Trilogy plus another Darksword book.

The Darksword Trilogy:
Forging the Darksword, volume I
Doom of the Darksword, volume II
Triumph of the Darksword, volume III

And also Legacy of the Darksword.

In a world where magic is life, baby Joram was born without magic, so he was pronounced as being "dead". But guess what? According to prophecy, this Joram held the fate of the world.

Tough luck. =P

The Darksword trilogy told the story of Joram, from birth till he became a man, and ended with his decision and action that changed the world forever.

Of course, in between all that time, it's packed full of goodies!

The Legacy of the Darksword was a continuation of the story line after the trilogy.

Obviously there was a Darksword, how it's created and what's so special about it was revealed.

There were also magic, dragons, centaurs, faeries, tanks, laser, spaceships, space travel, time travel, battles, wars, romance, aliens, parallel universe, Merlyn (with "y" instead of "i"), Excalibur (mentioned), and a teddy bear with an orange ribbon.

I kid you not.

There truely are all those things in the novels, and no, they don't suck monkey balls being all together. That's what makes the novels so involving.

Being a Dragonlance fan for so many years it took me a bit of getting used to the magic system in the Darksword series, it's a refreshing change.

Great books by Margaret and Tracy, go read!

Tagged?

I seldom get comment so I was rather excited when I saw a comment to my last entry, thinking someone has something to say about my twisted sense of humour or something.

Instead I was told I am tagged.

Huh?

Probably something to do with having a link to my blog kua?

Whatever, I hope I am tagged with something nice like "slacker extraordinaire", or "nutter", or "bore your brain off", and not something that I will have a hard time living up to.

=P

Wouldn't have posted this if I wasn't tagged, now let me get back to slacking off my Raya holidays.

Gotta maintain my slacker reputation. =)
